A wholly original musical in Chavacano that will depict Zamboanga’s mythical genesis will be staged by the Teatro de WMSU on September 27-28 at the university gymnasium.
The Office of the Culture and the Arts of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU-OCTA) said the production is titled simply as “Saguan”, written and directed by Dr. Jose Genario Yap-Aizon. The dance are choreographed by Jervil Formilleza.
Gloria Villardo, officer in charge of OCTA, said admission will be free. The production is funded by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
She said Saguan is a “love story in the context of the three different tribes in Zamboanga – the Samas, Tausugs and the Subanons.”
“It is a musical play which will show the different cultures of the tribes through songs and dances (and) show the historical account of how the city got its name,” Villardo said.
The cast is made of members of Treatro de WMSU.
The show will start at 6:00 pm on each of the playdates.
