The Centro De Cultura Y Estudio Chabacano (CCEC) of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) successfully hosted the “Segunda Conferencia Nacional del Lenguaje Chabacano” with the theme “Lenguaje Chabacano y Cultura: Ta Revisita” on October 28-29, 2015 at the Social Hall of the College of Teacher Education of the said university.

Dr. Roberto B. Torres, Vice President for Research Extension Services and External Linkages is the prime mover of the newly established Centro de Cultura y Estudio Chabacano. It is through his initiative that the second national conference for the Chabacano language is realized. His continuous efforts in publishing noteworthy literature on the Chabacano roots as a language have been recognized locally and nationally.

Dr. Emmanuel Franco Calairo, the President of the Philippine Historical Association, Local History Committee Network (NHCP) and the Association of Studies Centers in the Philippines (KABANSA) as the keynote speaker in the said conference repeatedly stressed on the need to preserve our local dialect. Without the conscious and consistent use of the Chabacano language, it will lose its essence in keeping the identity and culture of the people.

Nine speakers presented their research papers on Chabacano language and culture to include faculty members from Dela Salle University, 170+ Talaytayan MTB Incorporated of the College of Education-University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Western Mindanao State University and experts from the media, politics, and music.

There were more than 50 participants coming from the different State Universities and Colleges that participated in the event according to the Prof.Melanie F. Lear, Director for Centro de Cultura y Estudio Chabacano namely: (1) Bukidnon State College, (2) MSU-IIT, (3) Basilan State College, (4) Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology, (5) Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College including Higher Education Institutions such as (1) Claret College of Isabela, (2) Ateneo de Zamboanga, and (3) Southern City College Incorporated; and DepEd attended the event.
Chabacano songs were played during lunch break and a video presentation of Zamboanga City during 1945 was likewise presented.- Prof. Melanie F. Lear
