Seven WMSU Students Win Campus Journalism Honors

THE annual weeklong sportsfest of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), this year dubbed as the WMSU Centennial Palaro, will reel off today (Sunday, September 3) at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Jr. Memorial Sports Center (JFEMSC).

A parade from Pettit Barracks at 3:30 pm will precede the opening ceremony at the athletic stadium. In attendance will be almost 12, 000 main campus students of the university, who will be participating in one way or the other in the various sports and cultural events slated for September 3-8, Public Affairs Office Director Prof. Ali T. Yacub said.

WMSU President Dr. Eldigario Gonzales will lead university officials in the ceremonies. Msgr. Crisanto dela Cruz will give a message during the opening program, too.

A field demonstration and unveiling of the fighting crimsons and official log of the Palaro will climax the opening rites.

Also gracing the ocassion will be the newly-crowned Mr. and Miss WMSU 2006. The coronation pageant is scheduled to be held at the university gym in the evening of Satuday, September 1.

Aside from the athletic competitions, the Palaro will include contests in dancesport and popular dance, cheer dance, bodybuilding, and mountain biking. Cultural competition events are in visual arts, essay writing, oratory, debate, extemporaneous speech and music-making, Prof. Yacub said.

The Palaro theme is “WMSU – A Century of Commitment to Excellence.”

The sports and cultural contests form part of the education and wholistic development of WMSU students, including the inculcation of sportsmanship, interpersonal relations, moral formation, and healthy lifestyles. (Rey-Luis Banagudos / PAO-WMSU)
