Traditional Food Festival: In Celebration of Arts Month

The Office of the Culture and the Arts – Office of the President and the College of Home Economics, WMSU, in cooperation with the Local Government and the Association of Creative and Performing Artists of Zamboanga (ACPAZ) presented the Traditional Food Festival, a contribution of the organizers to the 2006 National Arts Month. This was also WMSU’s pre-centennial celebration held last Feb. 10, 2006, 2:00 pm at the WMSU Social Hall.

Prof. Ali T. Yacub, Director of Public Affairs, in behalf of WMSU delivered the welcome remarks while Dr. Roberto B. Torres, over all chair / Project Director, gave his Introduction of the Traditional Food Festival.

Invited Resource persons during the food festival presented 3 delicacies and 1 viand: Ms. Lorna L. Salome presented the famous Bayu-Bayu. Nora Ning Cabato from Tetuan, demonstrated on preparing Bukayo – a well-known product in her place, Ma. Grace Joy Sapua, a 3rd year BSHE student presented the Poto Maya con Taho and Almalyn Alfad with her viand called Pianggang.

Later, the audience had the chance of tasting the foods prepared during the cooking demonstration. The faculty and staff were also given the opportunity to evaluate the foods.

Dr. Roberto B. Torres, a member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, intimated to this writer, that in future celebrations of arts month, an expanded Food Festival would be implemented with traditional viands included in the list of foods to be presented to the public.
