Activities for the annual week-long sports and cultural intramural of the Western Mindanao State University is now all set with an official schedule of activities released on Wednesday.

College Sports Coordinators and representatives of the College Student Board sat down on August 6 to discuss the general guidelines for the screening of the athletes and to select the theme of this year’s Palaro.

Presided by Prof. Adrian P. Semorlan, the Director of the University Intramural Programs who is the Vice-Chairman, as well, of the WMSU Palaro 2013, the Sports Coordinators and CSB representatives have chosen the theme “Strengthening the Bonds of Peace and Unity through Sports.”

The Palaro will kick off on Sunday afternoon with a parade of athletes, officials and students at 3:30 pm from Pettit Barracks to Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex and a Field Demonstration of students at 5:00 pm.

Zamboanga City Mayor, Hon. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar will be gracing the opening ceremony by launching the Advocacy for Security Awareness and Peace (ASAP).

Among the highlights of the annual intramural are the following: Search for Mr. and Ms. WMSU 2013 on Saturday, 3:00 pm at the Juanito Bruno Gymnasium; Athletic Competition at JFEMSC and WMSU grounds from Monday to Thursday; Dancesport and Pop Dance Competition on Tuesday, 5:00 pm at the WMSU Gym; and Mountain Bike Race, care of the WMSU Bikers Association on Wednesday morning.

Aside from the sports events, the Palaro will also hold various academic and cultural tilts for the WMSU talents and intellects—Quiz Bowl on Monday, 8:00 am at the CET AVR; Oration and Extemporaneous Speaking at the College of Law Auditorium on Tuesday, 8:00 am, followed by the Visual Arts Contest at the Social Hall Lobby; Talumpati at the Law Auditorium on Tuesday, 1:00 pm; Essay Writing and Pagsulat ng Sanaysay on Wednesday, 8:00 am; Musical Contest at Law Auditorium on Wednesday 1:00 pm; and Debate at the Law Auditorium on 8:00 am.

The Cheerdance Competition will mark the closure of the annual Palaro on Friday, 3:00 pm at JFEMSC after the Championship Games and awarding ceremony of the athletes.

The WMSU Palaro is an annual sports and cultural celebration that strengthens the sportsmanship, interpersonal relations, moral formation and the healthy lifestyle of the students and members of the academe. (AJ Dalugdug – PAO/WMSU)
