The Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) Literacy and Numeracy Enhancement (LINE) Program, an extension project of the College of Teacher Education-Integrated Laboratory School led by Dr. Saniya G. Abirin, successfully held its culmination program on January 30, 2025. Running from October 2023 to December 2024, the initiative aimed to strengthen young learners\u2019 literacy and numeracy skills through active parental involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the program, parents engaged in structured home activities designed to enhance their children\u2019s reading and mathematical abilities. Aligned with Epstein\u2019s Model of Parental Involvement, these activities equipped parents with effective strategies to support learning at home. As a result, children gained confidence in their studies, improving their reading comprehension and mathematical proficiency. Parents also shared that their children now attend school with greater enthusiasm, knowing they can keep up with their lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the event, Dr. Riah R. Barcelona, Principal of WMSU ILS High School, expressed gratitude to all involved and emphasized her confidence that the program had strengthened students’ foundational competencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Abirin also thanked WMSU officials for their unwavering support and highlighted the significant progress among learners, noting improvements in both reading skills and mathematical problem-solving. She extended her appreciation to Barangay Tulungatung officials for providing a space that was transformed into a WMSU-LINE Community Learning Hub (CLH), offering students a conducive environment for reading and learning. This marks the second CLH established in Zamboanga City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commending the initiative, Dr. Joel G. Fernando, Vice President for Research and Extension Services, praised the program\u2019s emphasis on parental involvement in education. He also expressed enthusiasm for the I-EMBRACE project, an expansion of LINE that is currently in the planning stage, with WMSU Faculty Union President and Regent Dr. Adrian P. Semorlan set to serve as project coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success of the LINE Program underscores WMSU\u2019s commitment to educational excellence and community engagement, reinforcing the vital collaboration among educators, parents, and local stakeholders in nurturing young minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
