The Materials Research Conservation Division (MRCD) of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) launched a three-day Comprehensive Workshop on the Principles and Practices of Cultural Heritage Conservation at Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), reaffirming its commitment to advancing heritage preservation through capacity-building and specialized training. It was held from September 24 to 26, 2025, at the Social Hallof the College of Teacher Education this university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop builds on the momentum of NHCP\u2019s LGU Training on History and Heritage held at WMSU in 2024 and complements the ongoing restoration planning for the historic Zamboanga Normal School building and other significant heritage structures within the university campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed for faculty members in the fields of history, engineering, forestry, and architecture, as well as other stakeholders, the program provided practical insights from industry experts on safeguarding historic sites and artifacts. Beyond technical instruction, it also aimed to cultivate a deeper appreciation for conservation strategies that honor the past while ensuring the sustainability of cultural resources for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the activity introduces the Department of Science and Technology\u2013Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST\u2013FPRDI) and its collaborative projects with the NHCP on wood identification. These initiatives are envisioned to complement the academic pursuits of WMSU\u2019s various colleges, fostering meaningful collaborations and strengthening partnerships across the region in advancing heritage preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Khymer Olaso, who graced the event, emphasized, \u201cconserving cultural heritage is a complex, multifaceted endeavor that requires a delicate balance of technical expertise, community engagement, and respect for the past. By adhering to these principles and practices, we can ensure that our cultural heritage continues to inspire and educate future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Councilor Benjamin \u201cBG\u201d Guingona IV, Chair of the Committee on Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Foreign Relations, underscored the role of heritage in strengthening community identity and promoting sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the sidelines of the workshop, Mayor Olaso and Councilor Guingona toured the WMSU University Museum, accompanied by Dr. Melanie F. Lear, Director of the Centro de Estudio Mindanao (CDEM), and Dr. Jiellzon Jaime Villarama, WMSU Museum Coordinator with the assistance of Ms. Suzette de Guzman, Local Studies Coordinator of CDEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
