THE oustanding performance of three Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) students in recent national and International chess tournaments convinced the sponsor of the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship to stage the Mindanao Leg of the National Open in Zamboanga City on September 30-October 1.
WMSU chess varsity Team Captain Engr. Florendo said WMSU students Paulo James Florendo and Patrick Erle Florendo
were co-champions in the Palarong Pambansa National tournaments held in Naga City last May. From there Paulo went on to place sixth in the 7th ASEAN Age Group chess Championship held in Jakarta last June 11-20.During the qualifying matches for the international event, apulo emerged champion in the Natinal Junior and National Age group Finals for under-18 division, In which fellow WMSU students Eibtizam Nahudan was also among the 12 national finalist, Engr. Florendo revealed. In his report to WMSu President Dr.Eldigario Gonzales, Engr. thanked him for the support and financial assistance given by the university to the students that enabled them to produce outstanding results against though,highly- trained amateur chess players from different regions and countries. Engr. Florendo noted that the Philippines could have achieved higher honor in ASEAN tournament in Jakarta were it able to field more Filipino youth chess players, who were far fewer in number compared to other nations’ delegations.
As Mindanao leg coordinator of the Shell chess tournaments, Engr. Florendo said he is now accepting registration from interested players aged 20 and below. The tournament has two divisions,namely,youth for the 20 years old and under and kiddies for 14 years old and under. Although the Mindanao it is also open to comers from other regions of the country, as with all the other seven of its legs. The mindanao leg will be last, before the holding of the national grand finals on October 21-22 in SM North EDSA in Manila.
Regional leg registrants must fill up a form which they can obtain from the Zamboanga Hermosa Chess Association, c/o Engr. Florendo (telefax 062-9912689/email: firstname.lastname@example.org/cp number 09206279784) or download from www.shell.com.ph. Registrants shall pay a fee of P50, which will cover launch on opening day and a tournament t-shirt. the two day event shall be held at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. Leg champions shall receive prizes P5,000 and P4,000 forthe junior and kiddie divisions, respectively.National finals champion will receive prizes of P30,000 and P20,000 for the same respective divisions.
The shell tournament is in the 14th annual competiton and has produced grandmasters like mark Parague, Nelson Mariano II
and Wesley So, who at 12 years old was the youngest Filipino ever to play in the world Chess Olympiad that was held this year. Engr. Florendo said the training and development of chess champions in the country must start with pre-school children who show early on potentials to become grandmasters. He said many top-rated players are eventually enrolled as scholars in the country’s major schools.
