Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) garnered four championships in the recently-held Socio-Cultural Festival 2006 of the Mindanao Association of State Colleges and Universities Foundation (MASCUF) that was hosted by the University of Southern Mindanao and held in Kabacan, South Cotabato.
Alicia Mas -Soriano, dean of WMSU’s Institute of Physical Education, Culture and Arts (IPESCA) and head of the university’s 65-man delegation, in her post-event report said nursing student Nancy Anne Blanco “easily won the title (of Ms. MASCUF 2006) and was crowned on March 7″ while also winning the minor awards of Best in Regional Costume and Best in Interview. Blanco is the reigning Miss WMSU.
Michael Erick Gawaran, a second-year student in BS Psychology, won first place in the “talumpati” contest while Irish Francisco, a third-year in BS Architecture, was first place in charcoal rendering. The university’s powerhouse Jambangan Cultural Dance Troupe was champion in the indigenous dance competition.
The other winners were Dion Jay Tality (ABMasscom III) – second place in essay-writing; Anne Ramos (ABMascomm II) – second place in story- telling; Nelvert Anino (BS Architecture IV) – third place in on-the-spot painting; and WMSU Grand Chorale – third place in choral singing.
The event featured 15 different contests and took place on March 6-8. It is held annually amongst Mindanao’s 22 state colleges and universities. (Rey-Luis Banagudos / PAO-WMSU)
