IPU-ITSO, WMSU College of Home Economics Partner for IP Consultation and Copyright Endorsement
The Intellectual Property Unit – Innovations and Technology Support Office (IPU-ITSO) recently joined forces with the College of Home Economic (CHE) of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) for an Intellectual Property (IP) consultation on June 23, 2023. This collaboration aimed to identify and explore potential IP applications arising from the college’s works.
The consultation proved fruitful, resulting in the identification of a total of 55 copyrightable modules and instructional materials. These materials will now undergo endorsement to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) for copyright registration.
This endeavor initiated by IPU-ITSO highlights the importance of IP awareness and protection within academic institutions. By working together, they can ensure that the creative works produced by faculty and staff are properly recognized and safeguarded.
Potential benefits of this collaboration include protection of intellectual property wherein copyright registration with IPOPHL will grant WMSU exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, adapt, and publicly display the copyrighted materials; commercialization opportunities in which copyrighted modules and instructional materials could potentially be commercialized, generating revenue for the college and potentially benefiting the wider community; and increased innovation that will foster a culture of innovation within the College of Home Economics through recognizing and protecting the IP generated by its faculty and staff. This initiative serves as a model for other academic institutions in the Philippines. By following suit and partnering with IPU-ITSO, these institutions can ensure that the intellectual property created by their faculty and staff is properly identified, protected, and potentially commercialized.
Sharpening Skills, Valuing Innovation: the Advanced IP Valuation Training Workshop
From February 27 to March 2, 2023, the Badjao 2 Garden Orchid Hotel played host to a crucial knowledge-sharing event: the Advanced Intellectual Property (IP) Valuation Training Workshop. This collaborative initiative, held in Region IX, brought together a diverse group of participants with a shared goal – empowering themselves in the art of IP valuation.
Organized in partnership with key stakeholders – the Research Development and Evaluation Center (RDEC), the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator (ATBI), the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office IX (DOST IX), and the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST TAPI) – the workshop catered to a specific audience. Technology developers, technology transfer officers from various agencies within Region IX, and private individual inventors all converged to deepen their understanding of IP valuation.
This intensive program probed into the complexities of IP valuation, equipping participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to accurately assess the worth of their intellectual property assets. Through a combination of lectures, interactive exercises, and case studies, participants gained valuable insights into various valuation methodologies, market analysis techniques, and the intricacies of intangible asset valuation.
The Advanced IP Valuation Training Workshop stands as a testament to the collective commitment of the participating organizations to fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within Region IX. By equipping stakeholders with the tools to effectively value their intellectual property, the workshop empowers them to make informed decisions regarding the protection, licensing, and commercialization of their innovations. This, in turn, paves the way for the region’s continued growth and success in the ever-evolving world of intellectual property.
