WMSU Leads Collaboration on Sustainable Urban Farming and Plastic Waste Reduction

Demonstrating its leadership in environmental innovation and sustainable development, Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) formalized a partnership with the Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School (ICAS) and Saint Joseph School Foundation, Inc. through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the pioneering project titled “Development of a Sustainable Raised Bed Frame from Recycled PET Bottles: Enhancing Urban Agriculture and Mitigating Plastic Waste.” The MOA signing was held on July 7, 2025, at the Office of the President Conference Room, affirming WMSU’s commitment to advancing eco-friendly solutions and promoting community collaboration.

University President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena represented by Vice President for Resource Generation Dr. Teresita Narvaez, emphasized the importance of partnerships grounded in a shared commitment to education, sustainability, and community empowerment.

Engr. Janauber J. Garcia, faculty member of the College of Engineering and project leader, briefly outlined the purpose and direction of the project during the signing ceremony, effectively laying its foundation. The collaboration draws on WMSU’s strengths in both agriculture and engineering. The WMSU Research Innovation Center for Metals and Engineering (RICME) will spearhead the development and processing of shredded PET plastics, while the WMSU College of Agriculture will provide expertise in crop suitability, soil management, and sustainable urban farming techniques.

The MOA signing marks the beginning of a meaningful and forward-thinking collaboration aimed at transforming plastic waste into practical solutions that address both environmental and food security concerns. Through this initiative, WMSU, ICAS, and Saint Joseph School reaffirm their shared vision of fostering sustainable, community-driven innovations that educate, empower, and inspire action toward a greener future.

The event was attended by ICAS Director Rev. Fr. Maximo A. Campo, S.T.H.D., and Fr. Sergio Dela Noche, Director of Saint Joseph School. (Atty. MA Tamon-PAO)
