WMSU launches first IEC campaign promoting renewable energy resources
September 19, 2023
The First Information Education Communication (IEC) Campaign initiated by the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) Affiliated Renewable Energy Center (AREC) marked a pivotal step towards sustainable energy promotion
Held on August 24, 2023, at the CHE Conference Room, the event drew participants comprising esteemed technical and administrative heads from various Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) including Southern City Colleges, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, alongside key representatives from government bodies like the Zamboanga City Engineers Office, Department of Public Works and Highway, National Irrigation Authority, and Philippine National Police.
A critical milestone in the AREC Project, the IEC Campaign aligns with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) mission to champion non-conventional and renewable energy systems throughout the Zamboanga Peninsula region. Guided by the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 (Republic Act No. 9513), the campaign seeks to catalyze the exploration, development, and enhanced utilization of renewable energy resources encompassing biomass, solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and oceanic energy sources, including hybrid systems.
The campaign resonates with the global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 7, addressing “Affordable and Clean Energy.” As the world rallies against climate change and disaster vulnerabilities, the emphasis on energy efficiency and the amplification of renewable energy sources gain paramount importance.
The focus of the AREC campaign at WMSU rests on fostering awareness and enthusiasm for the extensive utilization of renewable energy resources, notably with an emphasis on solar energy. By raising awareness about the benefits of sustainable energy practices, AREC aims to contribute to climate change mitigation and disaster risk reduction, echoing the broader objectives of the international community.
Building on this successful event, AREC plans to organize three more IEC Campaigns in the municipalities of Ipil, RT Lim, and Naga from September to November 2023. These forthcoming campaigns are expected to cascade the knowledge, urgency, and collective commitment towards sustainable energy adoption across diverse communities within the region.
The WMSU-Affiliated Renewable Energy Center’s inaugural IEC Campaign stands as a testament to the region’s dedication to harmonizing energy innovation with environmental stewardship, setting a course for a greener and more sustainable future.
