3rd MASCUF Friendship Games

SEVERAL thousands of college students from Mindanao’s various state universities and colleges will participate in the 3rd Friendship Games of the Mindanao Association of State Colleges and Universities Foundation (MASCUF) from February 3 – 8 in this city.

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC), and Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) are jointly co-hosting the six-day competitions in sports, academic knowledge, and cultural graces, WMSU President Dr. Eldigario Gonzales said. Sports events will be held at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex while other actions will take place in the campuses of the three SUCs in the city.

Dr. Gonzales said the MASCUF games aim to “forge stronger ties among member-institutions and their constituents as well as promote excellence in the various aspects of the academe.” He said the games “will provide opportunities to develop the character of excellence and appreciation for culture aesthetic values, knowledge, understanding and socially desirable traits and promote a culture of peace through the spirit of sportsmanship.”

Participating athletes must be bonafide students, amateurs and less than 25 years old, overall games coordinator Manuel Paster, Jr. said. Paster is WMSU’s director for sports and fitness center.

Among the games are arnis, athletics, badminton, chess, dancesport, sepak takraw, taekwando, and ball games. In academics, the events are oration, talumpati, essay, sanaysay, quiz, on the spot painting, and charcoal rendering. Cultural contests are in folk dances, ethnic dances and the search for Ms. MASCUF 2005. (Rey-Luis Banagudos – Public Affairs Office, WMSU)
