Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) kicked off its much-anticipated Palaro 2024 on November 4 at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex, celebrating the spirit of sportsmanship, resilience, and community. The event commenced with an Athletic Parade and an Opening Ceremony that brought together students, faculty, and university administrators, all rallying around a shared passion for athletics and holistic development.
Dr. Nursia M. Barjose, WMSU’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, delivered a heartfelt welcome address, capturing the essence of what the Palaro represents. “As we gather here today to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship, competition, and camaraderie, we are filled with excitement and anticipation,” she remarked. “This Palaro is not merely a physical pursuit; it is a metaphor for life. It teaches us the value of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, fostering a sense of community and healthy rivalry.” She emphasized the dedication and unyielding commitment that athletes bring to the games, acknowledging both the physical and mental strength nurtured by their coaches. Dr. Barjose also reminded the student-athletes of the impact of their journey, encouraging them to leap, learn, and lead, pushing their limits and embracing every victory, big and small.
Adding to the occasion, Zamboanga City Mayor Hon. John M. Dalipe delivered an inspiring message, underscoring the broader significance of the annual event. “This annual event is not only about athleticism but also a representation of the University and City’s dedication to nurturing a culture of camaraderie, discipline, and excellence,” Mayor Dalipe said. He commended WMSU for including physical wellness and sportsmanship in its academic calendar, emphasizing the importance of developing well-rounded individuals who will someday be strong contributors to the community. His message acknowledged the efforts of teachers and coaches in shaping the students, highlighting the invaluable life lessons and sense of belonging instilled through mentorship. Mayor Dalipe encouraged all participants and spectators to engage passionately, foster friendly competition, and celebrate each other’s efforts. “May this year’s Palaro be a reminder of the importance of balance between academics and athletics, striving for individual excellence, and supporting our peers,” he concluded.
The ceremony proceeded with the hoisting of the Palaro flag by the WMSU Executive Committee led by Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, WMSU President, alongside other vice presidents and key officials. This symbolic act set the tone for the week-long event, unified under the theme “Stronger Together, Victorious Forever.”
The event’s lineup of activities promises to bring out the best in each athlete, inspiring a legacy of sportsmanship, resilience, and excellence. As the games unfold, the university community remains united in its support for the athletes, celebrating not only athletic prowess but also the enduring values fostered through sports. (LMP, PAO)
