Driving Innovation and Sustainability: Highlights from the 10th National Research Conference in Science and Mathematics Education

The 10th National Research Conference in Science and Mathematics Education, held on November 21–22, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center, Clark, Angeles City, Pampanga, was a landmark event that united distinguished scholars, researchers, educators, and experts from diverse fields. With the theme “Fostering Cultural Integration, Collaboration, and Innovation for a Sustainable Future,” the conference served as a vibrant platform for the exchange of groundbreaking ideas and research findings aimed at shaping the future of education in the Philippines and beyond.

A highlight of the event was the outstanding presentation by Ms. Rea Joei B. Cruz, a CBPSME graduate scholar from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), Western Mindanao State University (WMSU). Guided by her dedicated adviser, Prof. Clarito F. Concepcion, Ms. Cruz’s research earned praise for its significant contributions to the field of science and mathematics education. Her success underscored not only her exceptional dedication but also the critical role of her academic mentors and institution in achieving excellence.

This milestone was further reinforced by the collaborative efforts of the WMSU team, led by Dr. Mohammad Nur S. Paspasan, the CBPSME Project Director, and Ms. Ryanna B. Damsalin, a committed project staff member. Their guidance and active involvement throughout the research and presentation process were pivotal in Ms. Cruz’s success. This synergy of mentorship and teamwork highlighted the indispensable role of institutional support in nurturing future leaders in science and mathematics education.

The conference also featured insightful plenary sessions with esteemed speakers who addressed pressing issues in education and research. Key topics included Social Value, Scientific Soundness, Ethical Considerations, Sustainability, and the Internationalization of Research Papers. These discussions elevated the discourse on making research responsive to the global educational landscape while ensuring alignment with ethical standards and sustainable practices.

A standout moment during the event was the official launch of the Scholars’ Academic Journal, spearheaded by Dr. Jayeel S. Cornelio, Director of the Department of Science and Technology–Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). This pioneering initiative aims to provide a dynamic platform for showcasing scholarly work and advancing science and mathematics education. The successful launch was bolstered by the unwavering support of Dr. Josette T. Biyo, whose dedication to academic excellence in science education continues to inspire.

The conference’s success was also a testament to the unwavering leadership of Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, President of WMSU. Her steadfast commitment to advancing academic excellence has cultivated an environment where scholars thrive, fostering high-quality research and professional development. Dr. Ochotorena’s visionary leadership has been instrumental in positioning WMSU as a key player in science and mathematics education.

The 10th National Research Conference in Science and Mathematics Education was more than an academic event; it was a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and cultural integration. By emphasizing sustainable practices and fostering international connections, the conference highlighted the collective effort required to transform education and research for a brighter, more sustainable future in the Philippines and beyond.
