SUC’s Booters make it to the Grand Slam; SUC’s places 2nd over-all

Combined soccer players of Western Mindanao State University Integrated Laboratory School, Secondary Department (WMSU ILS) and Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC) walloped other competitors in the finals, 5-0, and emerged as the champion in the recently concluded Division of City Schools Meet 2003, at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex.

The victor’s line-up of 15 are currently enjoying their three wins-in-a-row, or the grand slam. Paul Lacbao and Edgar Loreto Araojo, all from WMSU ILS, knocked in two goals apiece to propel the team booters to the lop side triumph. Other scorer, Maicho Perez of ZCSPC, set one goal to forwardly make it to the grand slam.

The SUC’s soccer team, aside from the three goalers, was empowered by WMSU ILS students – Jose Coscolluela, Philip Andrew Enriquez, Yusuf Vincent Sahak, Gerald Gavalan, and Thadeus John Bueta: AND ZCSPC high schoolers – Ahmed Nahyeen Tahil, Mark Perez, Julblas Ramos, Edwin Envidiado, Justin Elmo Linato, Joe Marie Leonido, and Patrick Pagente. The leading force of the team is coach Blasito Garcia.

On the other hand, the SUC’s team dominated in other events. WMSU ILS’s swimming enthusiasts, spearheaded by Coach Harry Subibi paved their own way to the Regional Athletic Meet. The “finned” studs are as follows: Margaret Joy Iglesias (7 gold, 5 individuals and 2 relays); Ma. Cristina Atienza (7 gold, 5 individuals and 2 relays); Kristine Pura Cruz (1 gold and 3 silvers); Karima Sali (1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze); Joyce de Guzman ( 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) and Keeno Ian Moralde (2 silvers and 2 bronze). The girls made it to the lead in the over-all champion for the secondary level.

WMSU Taekwando jins clobbered all the other players, finishing them off with lighting – fast kicks, garnering all the gold medals in their categories.

The aggressive team and over-all champion, composed of boys and girls, was powered up by Aries Jones Alviar (Fin weight); Murkahim Udah (Light weight); Cathy Jane Hampac (Fin weight); Sarah Gail Arcillas (Bantam weight); Jenefer Tayag (Feather weight); and Shirley Anne Epan (Light weight) and with the University Taekwondo coach, Mr. Dennis Aquino.

The Florendo brothers, Paulo James Florendo and Carl Mark Florendo, outwit the other chess players, obtaining gold and silver medal respectively. The aspiring chess masters were coached by Mr. Andrew del Mundo.

The SUC’s team under class ’37 is originally composed of three universities namely Western Mindanao State University Integrated Laboratory School, Zamboanga City Polytechnic College and Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology.

The over-all standing of the different teams are as follows: SMPAA grabbed the 1st place while SUC’s and Unit 2 bagged 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

WMSU President, Dr. Eldigario D. Gonzales was overwhelmed with the splendid performance of the SUC’s team in Division City Schools Meet 2003.

All these said winners, with the hope of bringing home the bacon, are qualified to compete in the upcoming Regional Athletic Meet which will be held tentatively in Ipil, Zamboana del Sur on March 2-7, 2003. Kudos to one and all and keep the fire burning! – (Mrs. Olga T. Victorio)
