LOCAL farmers can soon more easily access information about agricultural technologies, statistics, planting materials and enterprises from the Techno Pinoy Center that will be put up this month at the City Agriculturist Office in Tumaga, this city.

The Farmer’s Information and Technology Services (FITS), as the center is formally called, is a joint project of the City Government, Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) and the Western Mindanao Agriculture, Forestry and Resources Research Development consortium (WESMARRDEC).

WESMARRDEC Chariman Dr. Eldigario Gonzales said the city’s Sanguniang Panglungsod recently passed a resolution authorizing City Mayor Celso Lobregat to enter into an agreement with PCARRD and WESMARRDEC in which the local government will provide the equipment and office space to operationalize the center.

The agreement will be signed on March 22, Consortium Director Dr. Emilie Enriquez said. A similar agreement with the municipal government of Lamitan, Basilan Province will also be formalized on March 16 in Sta. Clara, Lamitan. The Techno Pinoy Center there will be mainly for the benefit of the Sta. Clara Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Integrated Development Cooperative, Dr. Enriquez said.

Aside from the information services, the center will also extend technology clinics, training, sale of planting materials and inputs, entrepreneurial assitance and referrals.

WESMARRDEC is an aggrupation of 15 government agencies and state universities and colleges that facitilates and disseminates research in agriculture, forestry and natural resources through various means and strategies. It has seven working groups led by the Regional Research and Development Coordinating Committee (RRDCC), which is chaired by Dr. Gonzales. The RRDCC is the policy-making body of the consortium. Its secretariat is based in the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), which is a member. (Rey-Luis Banagudos / PAO-WMSU)
