Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) headed by Dr. Grace J. Rebollos launched the university’s Curuan External Studies Unit (ESU) last June 4 at the Curuan National High School Multi-purpose Hall, Barangay Curuan of this city.
The occasion also gave venue to the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) among WMSU, represented by Dr. Grace J. Rebollos; City Government of Zamboanga headed by Mayor Celso L. Lobregat; Barangay Curuan administration headed by Barangay Captain Noel B. Perez; and Department of Education (DepEd) represented by Schools Division Superintendent-Dr. Dolores B. Alcanatara with Curuan National High School (CNHS) Principal-Dr. Larmie C. Abad.
During the launch, Dr. Grace J. Rebollos explicated that there are two concepts in propelling the sustainment and development of the Curuan External Studies Unit: Top most is “access”. WMSU recognizes Curuan’s need to avail tertiary education for its children, thus WMSU brings the university to the people of Curuan. She also added that the campus will not only serve Curuan alone, but it will also address the demand for higher education of the people in the nearby barangays and islands. Secondly, Dr. Rebollos expressed her appreciation towards the mutual efforts of the City Government, Barangay Curuan administration and the DepEd Schools Division office and the Curuan National High School. The combined travails and ingenuity of the different people and agencies involved will nurture the seed of “quality” to make WMSU-Curuan Campus a full-blown college of the university.
“Let’s pray with a lot of hope that we can make this campus a real university campus that is deserved by our people,” Dr. Rebollos further expressed her vision for the institution.
Currently, WMSU-Curuan campus offers BS Education and BS Computer Science. Changes and developments will be instituted since the ESU utilizes the facilities of Curuan National High School. On the other hand, Mayor Lobregat pledged to provide at least two rooms and 20 computer units for the ESU. Curuan Barangay will render security services to the ESU as well.
Considered as a benchmark in the history of Curuan, the event was graced by the Commission of Higher Education (CHEd) Region IX Director-Dr. Emmylou B. Yanga and other CHEd officials; WMSU officials and some members of the faculty; officials of neighboring barangays and local city councilors; and CNHS faculty.
After the MOA signing, an ocular inspection of the CNHS facilities was lead by Mayor Lobregat together with Dr. Rebollos. Provision of repairs and improvements were discussed during the inspection. (Ekeena O. Lim, PAO-WMSU)
