WMSU’s Architecture Researches Get CHED’s Nod for APCHER Exhibit
August 31, 2004

The Integrated Research Utilization Program (IRUP) is a new program launched by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). It is tasked to create a central repository of information on research outputs and research utilization activities in and on higher educaiton. It also supports and conducts activities to disseminate and market these research outputs.

As one major dissemination activity, CHED has invited all 111 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) to submit completed institutional and externally funded research outputs during the last 3 years (2001-2003) that re considered matured technologies or are ready for adtoption/utilization by the intended users. Only ten (10) SUCs were chosen to exhibit during the ASIA-Pacific Conference on Higher Education Research (APCHER) held last 18-20 August 2004 at the Manila Hotel.

Our University submitted 8 completed, matured technology researches (3 from the College of Architecture, 5 from the College of Engineering and Technology). Out of these submitted researches, the three (3) multi- awarded researches from the College of Architecture (CHED declared Center of Development – 2) done by the College Dean, Architect Domingo A. Abarro III, FUAP, were chosen to be exhibited. Thus, The Western Mindanao State University was honored to be one of the ten SUCs chosen to exhibit in this International Conference.

Dean Abarro, a “UAP Hall of Famer” and who has just been elevated by the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) to the College of Fellows (1st and only Fellow in Region IX) did his researches on the Zamboard (Zamboanga Cement Bonded Board) panel product and its applications, the Zamboard Walling Sytem and the Zamboard Upper-Level Flooring System which won in local, regional and national research competitions and inventions sponsored by PCCARD, WESMMARDEC, DOST, and TAPI. The research outputs are intended to be used in low-cost housing, to help the National Government in its thrust to provided alternativ housing materials and construction systems that are safe, sound and cheaper than conventional materials and constructing systems.

This proves that the WMSU thru the College of Architecture is actively involved in Research and Production Programs creating a positive impact in our communities and in fulfillment of its motto: “La Universidad para la Commidad,” through the able leadership of its President, Dr. Eldigario D. Gonzales. (Wilfred Caesar T. Macaso, College Secretary)
