WMSU-ESU Celebrates 741 Graduates in 80th Commencement Exercise

On May 30, 2025, 741 graduates, stories of perseverance, and possibilities waiting to unfold were celebrated. Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) held its 80th Commencement Exercises at Diplahan Municipal Gymnasium, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena spearheaded the event and introduced the key speaker, Assistant Solicitor General Justice James L. Cundangan, who delivered not just a speech, but an inspiring message to the graduates. He urged the graduates to reflect not only on what they have accomplished, but on what kind of life they intend to live.

He shared the tale of two children, both from difficult beginnings. One grew up and said, “I am poor because my father was poor.” The other became a driven, successful businessman, and said, “I am successful because my father was poor.”

Justice Cundangan challenged graduates to rise above the noise — to embrace a different kind of balance. Not just life-work balance, but life-work-work-work balance. A balance that acknowledges effort, grit, and the slow build of real success.

As the Commencement Exercises ended, the 741 graduates were encouraged to celebrate the memories, to honor the journey, and to choose their path. (Atty. MA Tamon-PAO)
