The Department of Mathematics and Statistics within the College of Science and Mathematics successfully conducted the annual University-wide Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) on October 8, 2024. The event, held at the Social Hall of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), celebrated the 35th National Statistics Month (NSM) under the theme “Advancing Data and Statistics through Digital Transformation: A Road to an Empowered Nation.”
The PSQ is a competition designed to assess the statistical knowledge of first-year college students from various institutions across the country. This yearโs quiz, the 28th in the series, was organized in collaboration with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the government’s Central Statistics Authority, and the Philippine Statistics Association, Incorporated (PSAI).
Dr. Mohammad Nur S. Paspasan, Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, emphasized the NSM’s objective to promote, enhance, and instill awareness of the significance and value of statistics in various societal sectors. He also underscored the importance of public cooperation and support in improving the quality and standards of statistics in the Philippines.
Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, WMSU President, graced the event with her inspiring remarks. She expressed her appreciation for the college’s efforts in organizing such activities that highlight the crucial role of statistics in daily life and professional endeavors.
In alignment with the President’s words and the contest theme, EnP. Ma. Luz V. Agbani, a former Visiting Lecturer at the CSM, motivated participants to pursue their passion for statistics. She emphasized the pivotal role of statistics in nation-building through digital transformation, especially as WMSU aspires to become a prominent smart research university.
Students from various colleges at WMSU, including the College of Agriculture, College of Asian and Islamic Studies, College of Architecture, College of Criminal Justice Education, College of Computing Studies, College of Forestry and Environmental Studies, College of Home Economics, College of Liberal Arts, College of Nursing, College of Engineering, College of Public Administration and Developmental Studies, College of Science and Mathematics, College of Social Work and Community Development, and College of Teacher Education, competed in this intellectually stimulating activity.
