President Ochotorena Leads Oath-Taking of New University Digest Editorial Board

Western Mindanao State University welcomed a new chapter in campus journalism as the incoming Editorial Board of The University Digest officially took their oath of office during the Turnover and Oath-taking Ceremony held on July 16, 2025 at the Social Hall.

The morning event opened with warm acknowledgments from Dr. Lea E. Usman, the longtime adviser for Technicalities, who delivered her opening message celebrating the publication’s resilience and growth. She emphasized how student publications serve as a β€œbreeding ground for future critical thinkers and responsible communicators.”

A highlight of the event was the inspirational message delivered by WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena. In a deeply personal message, she recalled her time as a student-journalist with the Digest, serving as its Feature Editor while her husband, Ret. BGen. Ramon M. Ochotorena, held the post of Editor-in-Chief.

“The pen is mightier than the sword, and perhaps nowhere is that more true than in a university campus,” she began. “The University Digest is more than ink on paper. It is the heart of student expression. It gives students a space to be heard, to ask questions, and to shape the story of our institution.”

Dr. Ochotorena emphasized that each editorial team becomes part of the Digest’s long-standing legacy. She called on the incoming board to write with clarity, integrity, and courage.

“In a world where misinformation spreads quickly and noise often drowns out what really matters, your role as campus journalists is more important than ever,” she said. “Use your voice to tell stories that matter, to question, to celebrate, and to stand for truth.”

She concluded her speech by affirming her support for the publication and for all WMSU students. “Continue the legacy of the University Digest as a force for good, for excellence, and for truth in our campus and communities.”

The university president then led the formal oath-taking of the new Editorial Board, headed by incoming Editor-in-Chief Kaycee Miranda. Outgoing EIC Remleh Grace Falcatan turned over the leadership with heartfelt words of gratitude and advice.

Present during the ceremony were Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Dr. Fredelino M. San Juan and Engr. Evelyn N. Angeles, Director of the Office of Student Affairs, who both offered their congratulations and encouragement to the staff.

The morning program also featured the presentation of the Accomplishment Report by Miranda and the Financial Report by Managing Editor for Finance Kamille Ladjahassan. A video presentation recapping the highlights of the past academic year was also shown to the attendees. In the afternoon, the team proceeded to an in-campus team-building activity. Through interactive games and discussions, the staff bonded and reflected on the value of collaboration, responsibility, and shared goals.

The University Digest, official student publication and one of the oldest student organizations in WMSU, continues to thrive as a platform for student voice and truth. Its legacy lives on through every story written and every journalist sworn in. (LMP, PAO)
