WMSU Joins 3rd Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) participated in the 3rd Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on September 11, 2025, underscoring its commitment to disaster preparedness and institutional resilience. The nationwide drill was conducted in accordance to Republic Act 10121, also known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, which promotes readiness in times of disasters and calamities.

At the sound of the alarm, faculty, staff, and students carried out the β€œDuck, Cover, and Hold” procedure as part of the simulation. Student volunteers from the Criminology Department also assisted in the orderly conduct of the activity. The drill aimed to strengthen the university community’s capacity to respond effectively in the event of an actual earthquake.

The activity was spearheaded by the University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (UDRRMO) led by Director Al-Rashid Jama, with the support of Mr. Mark Anthony Almeda, Ms. Maria Teresa Sta. Ana, and Mr. Ryan Torres.

The Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ZCDRRMO), through the participation of Ms. Sitti Merza P. Milahad, Mr. Jayson I. Cerdenia, Mr. Madzlan U. Doh, and Ms. Marlene Joy C. Perez, collaborated with the university in facilitating the drill and evaluating its implementation. The initiative was also supported by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council IX (RDRRMC IX).

Through this exercise, WMSU reinforces its dedication to fostering a culture of safety and preparedness by promoting awareness, vigilance, and cooperation among its academic community.
