WMSU Ushers In the Christmas Season with Lights, Legacy, and Loyalty

The lights switched on and the yuletide season came through at Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) on December 1, 2025, instantly transforming the campus into a warm and vibrant symbol of celebration. The lights brought with it a sense of joy and anticipation, reminding everyone that the yuletide season is a time to gather, reflect, and embrace the traditions that bind the WMSU community.

University President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena shared her joy and anticipation for the season, expressing, “My Christmas is very happy,” and reminding the WMSU community that “we celebrate Christmas because everything is right.” She spoke with genuine excitement for the occasion and hopes that the spirit of the season continues to inspire the university family. More than the festivities, she emphasized her wish that “the passion, dedication, and true loyalty to the Alma Mater will surpass any of the activities of the university,” underscoring her belief that the heart of WMSU lies in the commitment of its people.

During the Ceremonial Switch-on of the 2025 Christmas Display and the Opening of the 2024 WMSU Grand Alumni Homecoming, Dr. Nursia M. Barjose delivered a heartfelt message celebrating “unity, gratitude, and hope,” values she said are reflected in the simple tradition of decorating the campus, which “reminds us that even in the midst of challenges, there is always room for joy, community, and renewal.” She emphasized that after a year of rigorous academic pursuits, such moments allow the community to “pause, breathe, and remember that learning thrives best in an environment where people feel connected to their purpose, their colleagues, and the values that guide our institution.” Dr. Barjose encouraged everyone to let the ceremony inspire “compassion, generosity, and resilience.”

“It is with great joy and profound gratitude that I welcome all of you to our Grand Alumni Homecoming and the Ceremonial Switch On of our Christmas display,” the Dr. Barjose began, saying the evening was “not just a gathering but a celebration of collective achievements.” She highlighted how WMSU has produced topnotchers and lifelong bonds, reminding everyone that returning to campus brings them back to where their journeys started. “Whether you graduated decades ago or just recently, we are connected by the same spirit of service, excellence, and leadership,” she said.

Hon. Florencio M. Liong Jr. echoed this, noting, “Every time we return, we do not simply revisit our alma mater, we reaffirm our promise to carry its legacy forward,” adding, “WMSU shaped us, and it is now our turn to help shape its future.” The message ended with gratitude to the organizers whose efforts made the celebration possible.

To end the celebration, WMSU recognized the standout decorations in this year’s inter-office competition, highlighting the creativity and teamwork within the university workforce. The Administrative Office placed 4th Runner Up, followed by the Management Information Systems and Technology Office in 3rd and the Physical Plant and Engineering Services in 2nd. The Cashier’s Office earned 1st Runner Up, while the Records and Archives Office emerged as Champion, taking home the top prize for their exceptional presentation.
