WMSU, DOST Sign MOA for Two Community-Focused Research Projects

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), together with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), held a ceremonial Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing on July 2, 2026, to formally launch two research projects aimed at addressing the needs of communities.

The agreement covers the implementation of two DOST-funded research initiatives led by WMSU researchers. The first project, “Maternal and Childcare Glossary in Various Local Languages of the Zamboanga Peninsula,” is headed by Ms. Juvie B. Toribio and seeks to develop multilingual health communication resources that will make maternal and child healthcare information more accessible to local communities.

The second project, “Teenage Pregnancy: Risks and Realities,” is led by Asso.Prof. Hashim N. Alawi Jr. The study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to teenage pregnancy and generate evidence-based recommendations that can support policies and intervention programs for adolescents.

Each research project received funding support of more than ₱900,000 from DOST, underscoring the agency’s commitment to supporting research that addresses pressing community concerns and contributes to regional development.

In her message, WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena emphasized that the university remains committed to producing research that creates meaningful and lasting impact. She expressed hope that the projects would directly benefit the communities served by WMSU by making essential health information more accessible and by providing research-based insights that can guide programs and interventions for the region.

The MOA signing reflects the continued partnership between WMSU and DOST in advancing research that promotes inclusive development, strengthens community engagement, and improves the quality of life in the community. (AAS)
