Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) continues to strengthen its science-based extension initiatives through the implementation of the Inclusive Science for Livelihood in Agri-Aqua (ISLA) in Small Islands Program at Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga City.
As part of the initiative, faculty members of the WMSU Department of Chemistry (DOC) joined a water analysis training and island visit on August 16, 2026, aimed at enhancing their capacity to conduct water quality assessments using accessible and portable analytical tools. Sta. Cruz Island is one of the extension sites of the WMSU Department of Chemistry.
The training was organized by the WMSU Research Development and Evaluation Center (RDEC), in partnership with the Department of Chemistry and the Philippine Association of Chemistry Teachers (PACT)–ZamPen Chapter. DOST Balik Scientist Dr. Elmer-Rico E. Mojica served as the resource person and provided hands-on instruction on the proper use of water testing kits and portable digital pH and conductivity meters. Participants were also introduced to mobile applications that facilitate the monitoring and recording of measurements.
As part of the knowledge and technology-sharing component of the activity, Dr. Mojica donated the water analysis equipment to the Department of Chemistry, providing additional resources to support its future analytical and extension activities.
The training and island visit further strengthened collaboration among WMSU units and partner organizations while supporting the University’s continuing efforts to bring science and technology closer to island communities. (Ms. Sarah Sapalo, WMSU-DOC faculty)
