WMSU Opens Palaro 2026, Highlights Unity and Youth Development Through Sports

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) opened Palaro 2026 on October 19 at the WMSU Open Field, bringing together student-athletes from across the university for a competition centered on unity, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Anchored on the theme, “Six Years, One Legacy: One WMSU Moving Together Through Sports,” the annual event underscored the role of athletics in developing character, strengthening camaraderie, and preparing students for leadership.

In his welcome message, Dr. Fredelino M. San Juan, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, highlighted WMSU’s six-year legacy of pursuing excellence under the leadership of University President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, with the support of the Board of Regents and university officials. He emphasized the university’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to excel both academically and in extracurricular activities, including sports.

Dr. San Juan also stressed that the theme reflects the university’s shared identity, with the diversity of its colleges, departments, and external studies units strengthening the WMSU community. He urged student-athletes to remain humble in victory, gracious in defeat, and committed to upholding honor and character throughout the competition.

University President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena introduced the event’s guest speaker, Hon. Benjamin “BG” B. Guingona IV, City Councilor representing District II of Zamboanga City.

In his message, Hon. Guingona highlighted the importance of sports in building character, promoting physical and mental well-being, and preparing young people for life beyond the playing field.

Drawing from his experience as a former student-athlete, he emphasized that sports instill perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and humility, particularly in how athletes respond to victory and defeat.

He encouraged students to make physical activity a lifelong habit, stressing that participation in sports goes beyond becoming the best player. Staying active, maintaining good health, and enjoying the experience are equally important.

Hon. Guingona also emphasized that winning is not the sole measure of success, noting that an athlete’s character is reflected in how they treat teammates and opponents and respond to setbacks.

He further underscored that investing in sports means investing in education, health, and youth development, as athletic programs help shape disciplined students, responsible citizens, and future leaders.

Through Palaro 2026, WMSU continues to promote holistic student development by fostering discipline, camaraderie, sportsmanship, and unity across the university community. (MKMQ, PAO)
