Tycoon Tan Will Receive Doctorate Honors from WMSU

BUSINESS tycoon Lucio C. Tan will be conferred the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, by Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) during the opening of the 2005 General Assembly of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) in this city on June 28-30.

WMSU President Dr. Eldgiario Gonzales said Tan will receive the honor in recognition of his various philantropic projects in support of education in the country. Tan is the vice-chairman of the Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education (FUSE). He is a self-made billionaire whose main business are in banking, brewery and tobacco.

Some 600 presidents and other officials of the country’s various state universities and colleges are expected to attend the affair. Its theme is “Academic- Industry: Indispensable Partners in National and Global Development.”

The Assembly will consist mainly of plenary sessions in which top government officials will discuss current pivotal concerns in education. Among the topics shall be “Modernizing Classroom Instruction Through Interactive Technology” to be presented by Commission on Information and Communication Techonology Chairman Virgilio Pena, “SUC Research Agenda for National Development” by Department of Science and Techonology Secretary Estralla Alabastro, “Small and Medium Enterprises and Job Creation” by Senator Manuel Villar, and “Poverty Alleviation and Extension Services” by National Anti-Poverty Commission Lead Convenor Imelda Nicolas. Workshops will follow each of these presentations.

The SUC officials will also dialogue with Department of Budget and Management Secretary Emilia Boncodin, Commission on Audit Chairman Guillermo Carague, and Commission on Higher Education Chairman Rolando de la Rosa.

WMSU and other SUCs in the city, name Zamboanga Polytechnic State College and Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, will play host to the event, Dr. Gonzales said. (Rey Luis-Banagudos, PAO-WMSU)
