The Western Mindanao State University–College of Nursing (WMSU-CN), in partnership with the Barangay Baliwasan Health Center and Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) Milk Bank, spearheaded a milk letting activity at the WMSU Wellness and Lactation Center last October 10, 2019.

Milk-letting is an activity in which lactating women donate their breast milk to the government milk banks where donated milk are stored. Milk banks were implemented in consideration of some mothers who are unable to produce breast milk for their babies due to illnesses and other conditions that keep them from doing so. Breast milk is the best source of nutrients for babies and are great in keeping them safe from viruses and bacteria, and the said activity was of great help in the goals of the College of Nursing Extension Program.

Mothers who were willing to donate went to the venue and registered accordingly. A short lecture on family planning was discussed to them and a screening interview was done before the milk-letting process. A total of 18 mothers were accommodated and were able to donate a total of 1,070ml of breast milk, which were collected with a breast pump machine. (Story by Zainab Darmoul and M.Vincent S.
