CSWCD Engages Barangays for Sustainable Development

In keeping with its motto, “La Universidad na Servicio del Comunidad,” the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), through the College of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD) conducted a participatory resource appraisal (PRA) in the clustered barangays of Cawit – Tulungatung on February 11-12 and Ayala – Talisayan on February 15-16 in order to assist the barangays attain sustainable development utilizing the Ecosystem-Based Community-Centered Sustainable Development Organization and Management Approach (ECSOM). La Paz – Pamucutan barangays on March 1-3.

ECSOM is a strategy for change and sustainable development which is being advanced by the T. Kalaw Institute for Sustainable Development which is based in Makati City. WMSU, through CSWCD, collaborates with the institute by integrating the strategy in the University’s efforts to come up with a community outreach program that is responsive to the needs of the community as well as cognizant of the need for ecological sustainability.

The PRA attained the following objectives: identify data base on the following components – human resource development, ecological and livelihood sector, infrastructure development sector, and organization/administrative development sector; assess the capacity of local stakeholders to manage by existing resources by delving into the key enabling factors such as supportive institutions and policies, relevant technologies and access to financial and other resources; and encourage and develop local capacity of partners to participate in project planning implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

Barangay officials are expected to play a significant role in the planning and feasibility study formulation of priority development projects which they themselves will identify in a planning which will be held after the data gathered during the PRA have been validated by the research team.

The PRA was made possible through the efforts of the following researcher-facilitators from WMSU-CSWCD: Dean Prof. Eulyn Tangalin; Prof. Emerita Basilio; Dr. Chester B. Coronel; Prof. Glory Jean Leonin; Mrs. Joy Gaas; and Mr. Roberto Rivero III. Some CSWCD graduate and undergraduate students assisted in facilitating and documenting the activities. (Evelyn C. LuceƱo)
