Ms. Radiya Istarul who hails from Basilan province topped this year’s graduating class of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), this city.
Radiya, who finished Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, delivered her valedictory address as the first Yakan to do so in the history of WMSU. She made her parents proud of her. She credits her parents, who are both public servants, for her drive and determination to earn higher education. She recalls how her father constantly reminded her that a solid education is the only lasting legacy that they can leave to their children.
Radiya hopes to make it to the Congressional Internship for Young Muslim Leaders this year and earn good legislative exposure. Soon after, she plans to take up law.
Meanwhile, at least 1,655 students graduated from WMSU this year, coming from fourteen colleges in the main campus and fifteen external studies units. Forty-four graduated cum laude, led by Radiya. The commencement exercises for the main campus were held in two batches. The first batch was held in the morning of March 29 with Mr. Efren G. Peñaflorida, Jr., CNN 2009 Hero of the Year Awardee, as commencement speaker. Separate commencement exercises will be held in various external studies units starting March 26.
The second batch of the commencement exercises in the main campus which was held on March 30, with commencement speaker Mr. Jose R. Rodriguez, Director of the Spanish Cultural Center in Manila known as Instituto Cervantes de Manila. This year’s graduation theme is The WMSU Graduates: Expanding the Frontiers of Service and Social Responsibility to the Global Community. (Evelyn C. Luceño, PAO-WMSU)
