SUCs, CHED sign MOA on free education act

In support of the implementation Republic Act No. 10391, Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), as represented by University President Dr. Milabel Enriquez Ho, signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) last June 13, 2018 at the Malacañan Palace.

The ceremonial signing was witnessed by no less than President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, along with presidents of the SUCs and local university and colleges (LUCs) whose students are the primary beneficiaries of the said law.

RA 10931, better known as the “Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act”, was recently passed into law in order to provide affordable college education to indigent students by having their tuition and miscellaneous fees free of charge. This is in consonance of the vision of the vision of the government, which is to stimulate economic growth by raising the number of higher education graduates in the country.

According to CHED, around 1.3 million students from 112 SUCs and 78 CHED-recognized LUCs will benefit from the implementation of this act. At least Php 40 billion was allocated by the government for the initial year of implementation. (Liezel M. Parreño, WMSU-PAO)
