WMSU Community Continues its support for Women’s Empowerment

The Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) through the office of Gender Resource and Research Center (GRRC) never wavers its support for gender equality not just in the university grounds but also in the community. In her keynote message, Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, WMSU President, emphasized that women being stereotyped, boxed, unrecognized and women who were mere shadows behind successful men are now gone. “We have broken the barriers and challenging stereotypes. We have earned our place in society as leaders and pioneers of change. And so today, as we celebrate the National Women’s Month, with the theme, “We make change work for women: Agenda ng Kababaihan Tungo sa Kaunlaran”, we celebrate our unity, integrity, and struggles and recognize our role in nation-building and in the promotion of gender equity and equality.” Moreover, Dr. Ochotorena added that the month of March is also a celebration of unity, love, and equality regardless of gender preference. Dr. Mariam Zamora-Julkarnain, GRRC Director, said that women’s month is a recognition of the role of women in nation-building for brighter and greener tomorrow. “Women should be active contributors and beneficiaries of national development, we should empower each other, and lets us celebrate our achievement. Hindi tayo babae lang” Dr. Elmer M. Labad, Asst. GRRC Assistant Director, encouraged the participants to make the month of March an avenue to honor women who fulfill extraordinary roles in society. “May we continue to be part of advocating women empowerment and gender equality, may we all work hand in hand to close the gender gap.” He added at the end of his speech. For the entire month of March, the GRRC office prepared a lot of activities for students, faculty members, and non-teaching personnel of WMSU. This includes different seminars and webinars and competitions like make-up competitions and TikTok competitions. In addition, on March 31, 2022, the office recognized the Juanas in wmsu for their achievements and contributions in research, academics and extension services. (AZIZ SALIM WMSU-PAO)
