The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through its National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines (NCBP), recently embarked on a series of regional promotions for the “Horizon Scan on the Biotechnology Path of the Philippines.” A pivotal leg took place at Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) on June 21, 2024, spearheaded by Dr. Marilou Elago, Director of the WMSU University Biorisk and Biosecurity Committee, and Dr. Bon Evan Cuadra, Assistant Director of the WMSU Biorisk Management Office.
The event comprised a multifaceted program, fostering engagement with various stakeholders within the WMSU community. A highlight was the seminar, which brought together a diverse audience – Master of Science in Education students, esteemed academicians, and researchers. This interdisciplinary exchange provided a platform for exploring the multifaceted nature of biotechnology and its potential impact on the Philippines’ future.
Experts from academia, research institutions, government, and industry led the discussions, offering valuable insights into the numerous applications of biotechnology. The seminar delved into the potential of this field to create environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional methods, reduce energy requirements, and develop socially desirable products.
Beyond the informative seminar, the day witnessed a momentous occasion – the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between WMSU and the NCBP-DOST. This MOU signifies the start of a promising partnership, paving the way for collaborative efforts in promoting and advancing biosafety research and development within the region.
The presence of distinguished guests at the event further underscored its importance. Representatives from the NCBP-DOST, WMSU’s administration, faculty, and students all participated, underscoring the collective commitment towards propelling the Philippines’ biotechnology sector forward. The Horizon Scan on the Biotechnology Path of the Philippines Regional Promotions at WMSU stands as a testament to the growing recognition of biotechnology’s potential. The event’s success lies in its ability to not only impart knowledge but also to foster collaboration between various stakeholders. With WMSU and NCBP-DOST joining forces, the future of biotechnology in the Philippines appears bright, brimming with potential for innovation and progress.
