Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) intensified its commitment to peace and global citizenship through a strategic re-orientation hosted by the Peace & Human Security Institute, led by Associate Professor Ludivina B. Dekit. Held on October 14, 2024, the activity gathered university officials, including Vice Presidents, College Deans, and Directors, to focus on the institutionalization of Peace and Global Citizenship Education (GCED). This initiative aligns WMSUβs efforts with CHED Memo No. 1, series of 2019, which highlights the importance of GCED in fostering well-rounded, socially responsible students.
The meeting underlined the need for academic programs to adopt innovative approaches that integrate peace and global citizenship education across disciplines. By embedding GCED principles into the curriculum, WMSU aims to prepare students to engage with global issues from a position of empathy, responsibility, and cooperation. Dr. Nursia M. Barjose, Vice President for Academic Affairs, echoed this sentiment, calling on deans to spearhead the infusion of these values into their academic offerings.
“Embedding peace and global citizenship in our programs is not just a responsibility, but an opportunity to shape graduates who can contribute meaningfully to society. I challenge everyone to be proactive in incorporating these principles into your curriculum and activities,β Dr. Barjose urged the attendees.
In this effort, WMSU seeks not only to align itself with international educational standards but also to cultivate a campus culture grounded in mutual respect, global consciousness, and ethical leadership. The universityβs leadership envisions that through GCED, students will be equipped to address complex global challenges and contribute toward a peaceful, diverse society.
