In a remarkable display of academic excellence, faculty members from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS), College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) participated in the 18th Annual Convention of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines – Regions 10, 12 and BARMM, held recently in Bukidnon State University (BuKSU), Malaybalay City, Bukidnon last October 28 – 30, 2024. This year’s convention brought together educators and researchers from Regions 10, 12, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), focusing on the latest advancements in mathematical research and education.
The event featured esteemed invited speakers from various countries, including Dr. Jose ́ Luis da Silva from University of Madeira, Portugal, who delivered a keynote address on “Cameron – Martin Type of Theorem for a Class of Non – Gaussian Measures” Dr. Nanang Susyanto from the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia discussed “Non – Standard Method for Modeling Dependence Between Classifiers Using Copula Models: A Case Study in Biometric Score – Level Fusion,” while Dr. Paulo Canas Rodrigues from Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, presented on “Hybrid Methods for Time Series Forecasting.” Lastly, Dr. Rene Luna – Garcia from the Instituto Polite ́cnico Nacional, Mexico, addressed “Applications of Mathematics in Quantum Computing.” Their contributions highlighted the global nature of mathematical research and its relevance to local contexts. Also, speakers from different Universities in the Philippines enriched the convention, including Dr. Joy M. Mirasol, President of Bukidnon State University, Dr. Jose Ernie C. Lope, Director of the Institute of Mathematics, University of the Philippines – Diliman, Dr. Rhoda A. Namoco, Professor of Applied Mathematics, USTP, Dr. Richard B. Eden, a faculty of the Department of Mathematics, Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU), Dr. Cherry Mae R. Balingit, Director of Instruction, Central Mindanao University and Dr. Jayrold P. Arcede, Director of the Mathematical Statistical Computing Research Center, Caraga State University. Their presentations emphasized the importance of contextualizing mathematical research and education within the Mathematics community.
Selected faculty members from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, CSM, WMSU showcased their research through presentations on topics ranging from pure mathematics to applied statistics. Dr. Mohammad Nur S. Paspasan together with his research members, Mr. Aldison M. Asdain and Ms. Eman C. Ahmad presented their paper entitled “Triclique Polynomials and Triclique Neighborhood Polynomials of Graphs” explores new polynomial representation related to the structure of graphs. Dr. Anabel E. Gamorez, focused on “Subbasic Open Sets Induced By Monophonic Eccentric Neighborhoods of Graph Under Some Binary Operations,” introduces a new way to understand the topology of graphs by linking graph structures to topological concepts, specifically through monophonic eccentric neighborhoods. Meanwhile, Dr. Rochelleo E. Mariano his work on “Geodetic Bounds in the Join of Graphs,” which explored the geodetic properties of graph joins, which are formed by combining two graphs into a single new graph. Finally, Dr. Jerson S. Mohamad and Maydalyn H. Esperat discussed “A Simulation Study of Some Logistic Poisson, Multiple Ridge Regression Estimators,” which presents a comprehensive analysis of various estimation techniques used in statistical modeling, specifically focusing on logistic and Poisson regression frameworks.
Overall, the 18th Annual Convention was a resounding success, reinforcing the commitment of educators in the Philippines to advance mathematics and statistics education across the regions, while also fostering international collaboration in the mathematical community.
