RSTW 2024: Advancing STI for a Sustainable Future

The Regional Science Technology and Innovation Week (RSTW) 2024, co-hosted by the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region IX, is taking place with a robust program designed to highlight the transformative potential of science, technology, and innovation (STI). This year’s theme, “Siyensya, Teknolohiya at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan,” emphasizes STI’s vital role in fostering stability, prosperity, and security for communities in the Zamboanga Peninsula and beyond.

The activities of RSTW 2024 showcase diverse opportunities to explore STI’s practical applications in addressing pressing challenges. The event kicked off with an opening program at the Dr. Juanito A. Bruno Gymnasium, followed by a ceremonial signing of a memorandum of agreement for the establishment of the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCEN) in Zamboanga Peninsula at the WMSU Social Hall. This milestone initiative underscores the DOST’s dedication to advancing industrial innovation and strengthening local manufacturing capabilities. The signing was immediately followed by a press conference.

In her message, WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, ably represented by Dr. Joel G. Fernando, Vice President for Research, Extension Services, and External Linkages emphasized the transformative power of innovation. Citing Albert Einstein’s assertion that intelligence is the ability to change, Dr. Fernando highlighted the critical role of adapting and leveraging STI to meet the needs of the modern world.

“This week is more than a celebration—it is a declaration of purpose. Through the different activities, we spotlight the transformative power of science, technology, and innovation in addressing regional and national challenges,” Dr. Fernando stated. He also acknowledged DOST’s leadership, particularly that of Secretary Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., for fostering inclusive and sustainable development in the region.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., in his keynote address, underscored the importance of STI in mitigating the impacts of climate change, strengthening disaster resilience, and ensuring economic sustainability. Dr. Solidum introduced DOST’s strategic approach anchored on four pillars: promoting human well-being, fostering wealth creation, reinforcing wealth protection, and institutionalizing sustainability.

“Through science, technology, and innovation, we are laying the groundwork for national resilience,” Dr. Solidum remarked. He emphasized the need to embrace a green economy that prioritizes sustainability and inclusivity, particularly in the face of challenges like typhoons and agricultural losses. DOST’s initiatives focus on developing health technologies, providing educational programs, and implementing innovative solutions tailored to community needs.

RSTW 2024 features an extensive array of activities hosted across multiple venues which cover a broad spectrum of topics, from addressing geological hazards to exploring sustainable practices in agriculture, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship. The culmination of these activities is designed to inspire collaboration, foster innovation, and empower communities to create sustainable solutions.

RSTW 2024 is a testament to WMSU and DOST’s commitment to advancing STI as a driver of sustainable progress. By bringing together researchers, educators, entrepreneurs, and government leaders, the event fosters an environment where ideas can flourish, collaborations can thrive, and real-world solutions can be developed.

As Secretary Solidum aptly concluded, “We must not only survive but thrive. Together, through science, technology, and innovation, we can build a future that is resilient, prosperous, and inclusive.” RSTW 2024 stands as a beacon of hope and progress for the Zamboanga Peninsula, charting a path toward a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
