Region IX Shines at SCUAA National Games 2025 with Strong WMSU Support

Region IX delivered an impressive performance at the SCUAA National Games 2025, held from April 21 to 28 in the island province of Camiguin, securing an overall 5th place with a total of 21 Gold, 23 Silver, and 27 Bronze medals.

The athletes’ success was made possible through a combination of skill, determination, and the solid support of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) community. Notably, WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena took the time to visit the delegation personally, offering encouragement to athletes and coaches and watching several games in person. Her presence reflected the university’s continued commitment to uplifting its student-athletes beyond the classroom.

Dr. Ochotorena was joined by other university officials, including Vice President for Research Extension Services Dr. Joel G. Fernando, OCTA Director Dr. Almira E. Nochefranca, and CSSPE Dean Dr. Ma. Blancaflor R. Jimeno, all of whom provided critical support throughout the event.

Among the standout performances were the Karate-Do teams, where Region IX—led by WMSU athletes—emerged as overall champions in both men’s and women’s divisions. Ray Angelo S. Silva and Khyezzie Lil S. Bello earned Gold in individual and team events, while many others across Taekwondo, Swimming, Pencak Silat, and Arnis made it to the qualifiers or podium.

Region IX was also well represented in the Mr. and Ms. SCUAA 2025 pageant, with Ms. Queenly Mae Canete from the College of Teacher Education earning 2nd Runner-Up, and Mr. Carl M. Perez from the College of Criminal Justice Education named 1st Runner-Up and Best in Barong.

These achievements were backed by the dedication of coaches, coordinators, medical staff, and security personnel who ensured the smooth participation of the Region IX delegation. Particular thanks were extended to Region IX Sports Director Dr. Elmer M. Labad and WMSU Sports Director Assoc. Prof. Norman Lloyd B. Manginsay for their leadership throughout the games.

The SCUAA National Games 2025 concluded not just with medals, but with a renewed sense of pride and unity among the Region IX athletes and the WMSU community—proof that strong preparation, shared effort, and institutional support can lead to lasting success on and off the field. (Atty. M.A Tamon)
