Gala Night Highlights Legacy Behind WMSU’s College of Medicine

Following the historic commencement ceremony held earlier that day, the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) College of Medicine hosted its first-ever Gala Night on July 24 at the Garden Orchid Convention Center.

The Gala Night served as both a culminating activity and a moment of reflection not only on the journey of the graduates, but also on the collective efforts that led to the establishment of the WMSU College of Medicine. WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena expressed heartfelt appreciation to all who helped bring the college from concept to reality. She emphasized that this achievement was the product of years of planning, collaboration, and dedication from individuals within and beyond the university.

Among those recognized during the program were former WMSU President Dr. Milabel E. Ho, whose administration laid the groundwork for the creation of the College of Medicine, and Dr. Gloria G. Florendo, then Director of the Special Projects and Programs Office, who supported its technical and developmental processes. The university also honored Dr. Ma. Cecilia Cuaresma-Cruz, the first appointed dean of the college, for her early leadership and academic direction during its formative years.

Also acknowledged was Dr. Afdal F. Kunting, Medical Center Chief II of the Zamboanga City Medical Center, for his steadfast partnership in providing clinical training and support to the students. Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, President of West Visayas State University, was likewise thanked for extending technical guidance and sharing best practices during the initial stages of curriculum development and accreditation.

The event also paid tribute to past members of the WMSU Board of Regents, whose support and approval were instrumental in establishing the college. Their contributions, along with those of present university leaders, were described as vital to bringing quality medical education to the region.

Graduates were reminded of their responsibility to serve with knowledge, compassion, and integrity. Past and present faculty and staff who mentored the students throughout the program were likewise recognized for their role in ensuring the academic and professional growth of the pioneering batch. The evening also featured messages of thanks and musical numbers.

The event underscored the significance of collaboration and vision in the creation of the College of Medicine, which continues to stand as a legacy of leadership, commitment, and community-oriented medical education in the Zamboanga Peninsula. (LMP, PAO)
