Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) was honored by the City Government of Zamboanga during the 12th Memorial Commemoration of the Zamboanga Siege at the Freedom Memorial Park on September 9, 2025, for its unwavering humanitarian assistance to the people of Zamboanga City during the 2013 crisis. The honor reflects WMSUโ€™s lasting dedication to serving the community and standing as a beacon of hope and solidarity in the face of adversity.

The 20-day Zamboanga Siege, which started on September 9, 2013, tested the strength and resilience of the city. At that time, Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, now the University President, was serving as WMSUโ€™s Vice President for Academic Affairs. The WMSU Gymnasium was transformed into a satellite hospital to accommodate patients of the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) when the conflict threatened the hospital. Meals were prepared within the campus to nourish evacuees, while the university also provided safe spaces for individuals requiring psychological care.

Also receiving recognition was retired Police General Ramon M. Ochotorena, who also served as Regional Director of the Office of Civil Defense-IX, President of the WMSU General Alumni Association, Inc., and Member of the WMSU Board of Regents. During the siege, he was the Deputy Regional Director for Operations and directly commanded war room. He was commended for his exemplary leadership and dedicated service that guided the cityโ€™s defense and recovery efforts during the siege.

The commemoration, attended by city officials and partner institutions, highlighted the enduring resilience of Zamboangueรฑos while paying tribute to organizations like WMSU whose service continues to inspire the cityโ€™s journey of healing and unity. (Atty. MA Tamon-PAO)
