The Current Society, a student-led organization of the College of Teacher Education, in collaboration with the WMSU Youth Peace MediatorsโUNESCO Club and the Peace and Human Security Institute (PHSI), spearheaded the celebration of this yearโs National Peace Consciousness Month on September 16, 2025. The celebration carried the theme โMapayapang Bukas, Abot-Kamay sa Bagong Pilipinas.โ
On behalf of WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, the universityโs Chief of Staff, Dr. Berhana I. Flores, delivered her message: โTrue peace is a conscious effort. It is a choice every individual makes moment by moment, even in the smallest of ways,โ the message stated.
She also highlighted the role of the university in shaping students not only into excellent professionals but also into compassionate and responsible individuals who uphold integrity, embrace diversity, and seek harmony in all they do.
Adding depth to the celebration, Dr. Ludivina B. Dekit, PHSI Director, shared her expertise in peacebuilding through an insightful lecture. She highlighted the importance of empowering the youth by equipping them with peace and global citizenship education, noting that young people play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of dialogue and mutual understanding.
The celebration reflected WMSUโs commitment to being not just a center of academic excellence but also a beacon of peace and social responsibility in the region. (AS-PAO)
