Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) took center stage during the 2025 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW), held from September 22 to 25 at the Palacio del Sur, Zamboanga City. Through four booths: RAISE, WESMAARRDEC, RICME, and WMSU-ATBI, the university highlighted its commitment to advancing science, technology, and community development.
Among the eventβs key activities, WMSU co-organized the RAISE-WesMin Tech Pitching and the ZamPen Industry Reverse Pitching. Researchers and industry partners presented solutions to real-world challenges, with standout entry “Squid Savor Seasoning Powder” by Jevy C. Juntilla earning 1st Runner-Up recognition.
WMSU also took part in milestone partnerships during the celebration. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signing Ceremony was held with DOST 9, DOST-PCAARRD, DTI, WMSU, and RAISE to strengthen regional sustainability and partnership initiatives. In addition, term sheet signing with technology adopters marked a breakthrough step, enabling local enterprises and farmers to utilize WMSU-developed technologies such as Squid Savor and Feed Formulation for Zampen Native Chicken directly in their farms and businesses. These agreements underscore the universityβs drive to translate research into practical, market-ready applications that benefit local industries.
In his keynote address, DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. emphasized that RSTW serves as more than an exhibition, but as a platform to bring science and innovation closer to communities. Representing WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Dr. Fredelino M. San Juan echoed Rosalind Franklinβs words, “Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated,” underscoring how research and innovation improve livelihoods and everyday living.
The event also featured the Mindanao leg of HANDA Pilipinas: Sa Bagong Pilipinas, showcasing innovations in disaster preparedness, climate change adaptation, and community resilience.
With its active participation and achievements, WMSU reaffirmed its role not only as a center of learning, but also as an innovation hub, community partner, and catalyst for sustainable progress.(LMP, PAO)
