From Islands to Parliament: Strengthening Voices for Peace and Development

On October 9-10, 2025, Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) brought together participants from Zamboanga, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and Basilan at the WMSU Social Hall for the first roundtable titled โ€œFrom Islands to Parliamentโ€ which focused on commitment to peace and partnership for sustainable development.

The initiative, conducted by the Peace and Human Security Institute (PHSI) headed by Dr. Ludy Duarte Borja, in collaboration with the Council for Climate and Conflict Action Asia, aimed to amplify the voices of island communities in promoting inclusive and participatory governance within the Bangsamoro region.

WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena proudly welcomed the participants to the meaningful initiative to give voice to our island communities, ensuring that their perspective, experiences, and aspirations are heard and protected. The event was more than just a consultation but an opportunity to build partnerships, benefit collaboration, and empower our island communities to take part in shaping the future.

Prof. Francisco โ€œPanchoโ€ Lara, Executive Director of the Council for Climate and Conflict Action Asia, delivered his solidarity message, emphasizing the importance of understanding and addressing the human conditions faced by island communities. He expressed gratitude to the partners and stakeholders for their continued commitment to peacebuilding and inclusive development in the Bangsamoro region.

The roundtable served as a vital platform for fostering shared commitment, strengthening collaboration, and amplifying the voices of island communities toward lasting peace and sustainable development. (Atty.Ma Tamon-PAO)
