WMSU Partners with PCG to Foster Stewardship of the West Philippine Sea

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard West Philippine Sea-Transparency Group (PCG-WPSTG) conducted West Philippine Sea Symposium last October 10, 2025, at Dr. Juanito Bruno Gymnasium, WMSU.

Despite the suspension of classes due to inclement weather, faculty members and administrative personnel gathered for the symposium, demonstrating their commitment to deepen understanding and spark meaningful conversations about national sovereignty and environmental stewardship.

University President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena highlighted that awareness is the foundation of stewardship. The West Philippine Sea is a vital part of our national identity, an important part of our coastal communities, and a cradle of marine biodiversity. She added that it embodies our sovereignty and our shared heritage.

The event was attended by Commodore Jay Tristan Tarriela, the Philippine Coast Guardโ€™s spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, who served as the keynote speaker. He highlighted that the West Philippine Sea is not a disputed territory. His insights provided a deeper appreciation of the countryโ€™s maritime rights and the importance of collective vigilance in safeguarding the nationโ€™s waters.

The symposium concluded with a call for unity and continued awareness. It is a testament that the protection of the West Philippine Sea begins with informed minds and patriotic hearts.
