The Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) continues to strengthen its global academic presence as it proudly participated in the prestigious Sakura Science Exchange Program held at Okayama University, Japan from March 1 to 9, 2026.

Selected among five universities in the Philippines, WMSU was represented by BS Physics students Carl Lechim Aron V. Genito and Rea S. Sialana, together with faculty member Dr. Marvin A. Maulion. The program aimed to provide young researchers with firsthand exposure to Japanโ€™s advanced scientific research and rich cultural heritage, with Physics as the central theme.

The nine-day academic exchange was filled with immersive learning experiences. Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Japanese professors and researchers, marking the beginning of a collaborative academic journey. The participants engaged in a series of lectures, including discussions on quantum physics, operational amplifier circuits, optical sensors, and elementary particles.

Hands-on laboratory activities formed a significant part of the program. The WMSU delegates conducted experiments such as building a spectroscope, observing spectral lines, constructing LED circuits, and measuring Planckโ€™s constant. They also explored advanced concepts through experiments on single photon observation and the double-slit interference phenomenon, deepening their understanding of modern physics.

Beyond the laboratory, the participants were given exclusive access to cutting-edge research facilities, including the Single Photon Laboratory and the world-renowned SPring-8 Synchrotron Radiation Facility. These visits provided valuable insights into current scientific innovations and large-scale experimental research.

The program also fostered cultural exchange. The delegates experienced Japanese traditions through activities such as a tea ceremony and visits to historical and cultural landmarks, including Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle. These experiences enriched their appreciation of Japanโ€™s heritage and strengthened international camaraderie.

This international engagement highlights WMSUโ€™s commitment to producing globally competent professionals and advancing scientific research. Through opportunities like the Sakura Science Exchange Program, the university continues to empower its students and faculty to contribute meaningfully to the global scientific community. (LMP, PAO)
