In a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signing event, Department of Education-Regional Office IX and Western Mindanao State University-College of Home Economics signed pact to address the nutrition of schoolchildren aiming to improve their learning capability and performance in school. The inking of the MOA was held last May 6 at WMSU-College of Home Economics.
The pact signing served as another highlight in the school nutrition program as WMSU was chosen as partner to develop regional-local indigenous vegetables recipe. It is a proven fact that the child’s performance in school can be attributed to his nutritional intake. The MOA signing was headed by Regional Director for Region IX-Corazon P. Brown, WMSU President- Dr. Milabel Enriquez-Ho, CHE Dean-Prof. Lucia M. Santos and DepEd Regional Office IX Nutritionist-Dietitian-Eric T. Bangkal.
OIC Regional Director for Region IX, Corazon P. Brown said that the school child’s nutrition must not only be focused on the macro nutrients but also with the micro nutrients in his daily diet. She was grateful that WMSU extended support with regards to the technical and scientific aspects of coming up with the recipes.
WMSU President, Dr. Milabel Enriquez-Ho expressed her support and willingness to be a partner with DepEd for a cause such as helping to improve the performance of children in school by coming up with nutritious but readily-available and affordable vegetables food menu.
“This will be the beginning of a blooming romance between WMSU and DepEd,” said Dr. Ho. The undertaking is in line with the university’s commitment to serve the community, WMSU President’s 10-Point Agenda and the College of Home Economics’ vision and mission.
The tie-up between the DepEd and WMSU commenced last March and will conclude on August. The test kitchen will explore on 20 different vegetable recipes. A showcase of the recipes is slated on July. (EKEENA O. LIM, WMSU-PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE)
