The region’s prime center of education traces its beginnings to 1918 when it was opened by the defunct Department of Mindanao and Sulu with an offering of secondary school general academic curriculum for the benefit of Mindanao Students. After World War II, it rapidly expanded so that by 1969, Congress passed a law that converted it into the Zamboanga State University from Zamboanga Normal College.
