The Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) College of Nursing officially unveiled the Florence Nightingale Commemorative Marker on May 16, 2025, in honor of the founder of modern nursing and the enduring legacy she represents.
The ceremony was attended by university officials, faculty members, students, and alumni. The commemorative marker, made of white marble, was donated and turned over by Nazirites Batch 1995, alumni of the College of Nursing.
Assistant Professor Aracelie L. Araneta, Alumni Coordinator, delivered the Welcome Remarks on behalf of OIC-Dean Dr. Rubelle Marshah Ho-Alavar. She highlighted the continued relevance of Nightingale’s legacy in the college’s academic and professional culture.
Associate Dean Assoc. Prof. Hashim N. Alawi, Jr. delivered a message reflecting on the importance of compassion and competence in today’s healthcare setting, emphasizing the lasting influence of Nightingale’s principles.
The Inspirational Message of WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla Altea Ochotorena was delivered by Dr. Joel G. Fernando, Vice President for Research, Extension, Services, and External Linkages. He called on nursing students and professionals to uphold Nightingale’s ideals in both practice and service.
The program concluded with Closing Remarks from Assistant Alumni Coordinator Ms. Myrdred G. Rumbaoa, who reiterated the significance of the nursing profession as a lifelong commitment to care and humanity.
