As the sun cast its golden light over the Western Mindanao State University campus on graduation day, the air was filled with celebration, hope, and the promise of new beginnings. In a sea of red togas and proud families, one voice rose with clarity and courage. Lovejoy P. Cantano, Bachelor of Science in Home Economics graduate and valedictorian of WMSU Batch 2025, shared a personal reflection that championed staying true to oneβs passion over following convention, and choosing heart over expectation.
βI was the class salutatorian in Junior High School,β she began. βEveryone expected me to pursue STEM or HUMSS. But I chose the TVL strand. I chose what others didn’t expect.β
For many, this would have been a risky deviation from the norm. But for Cantano, it was an act of clarity. Even as a young student, she had already discovered a passion for teaching and a specific desire to uplift others through Home Economics, a field that is often overlooked but plays a crucial role in shaping communities.
Some people questioned her decision. Some thought she was throwing away her academic potential. But Cantano stood firm, knowing that success is not about living up to other peopleβs standards. βTrue success,β she said, βis not about meeting other peopleβs expectations. It is about having the courage to pursue what genuinely calls your heart.β
That decision laid the groundwork for a college journey full of long nights, heavy workloads, and moments of doubt. But it was also filled with purpose. βChoosing Home Economics felt like coming home,β she said. βIt was the perfect bridge between my academic abilities and my authentic passion.β
Her message connected with her fellow graduates, especially those who have taken paths less recognized. She reminded everyone that the road to fulfillment is not always the most traveled one. Sometimes, it is the one that requires the most faith.
She acknowledged the reality awaiting them such as a competitive job market and an ever-changing world shaped by technology and complexity. Yet she expressed confidence that WMSU graduates are ready to meet those challenges. βWe are ready. WMSU made us ready.β
Cantano also painted a diverse picture of the futures awaiting her fellow graduates. Some will go on to pursue advanced degrees, others will begin careers in business, education, public service, or abroad. But whatever path they choose, she urged them to hold fast to the core values they learned from Western Mindanao State University. These values, she urged, should not be left behind at graduation. They must guide every step moving forward. βWhen people ask where you studied, tell them about WMSU with pride,β she said. βTell them about professors who taught with both knowledge and heart. Tell them about classmates who became lifelong friends.β
She thanked her parents for their unwavering support, her professors for their wisdom, and her friends for walking beside her throughout her academic journey. She also expressed heartfelt appreciation to WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, whose leadership and dedication continue to elevate the university.
In one of the most powerful parts of her address, Cantano paid tribute to humble beginnings. βOur roots may be planted in simplicity, but that is not a disadvantage,β she said. βIt is a source of strength. It is the very reason we strive for more.β She brought the message home with a powerful reminder of their shared roots. βPerhaps our hometown wasnβt on a grand map. Perhaps our childhood home wasnβt a mansion. But the simplicity of our beginnings is not a limitation. It is a catapult.β
Her speech was a reminder that where we start does not define where we can go. With passion, resilience, and authenticity, the future can be shaped in remarkable ways. Her story is proof that the most meaningful victories are not always the loudest or the most conventional. Sometimes, they are born from quiet conviction and the refusal to be boxed in.
As she ends her speech, this yearβs lone summa cum laude left her fellow graduates with one final challenge: βGo forth and build the lives you have always envisioned. The world awaits the impact we are destined to make.β
With those words, a new chapter began. And if her story is any indication, the Class of 2025 is ready not just to enter the world, they are poised to change it. (LMP-PAO)
