WMSU Participates in Mangrove Planting Initiative with OVP, OCENR, and Philippine Red Cross in Taluksangay

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), in partnership with the Barangay Local Government Unit (LGU) of Taluksangay, conducted a Mangrove Planting Initiative on February 7, 2026, in Zamboanga City to strengthen coastal protection and climate resilience. The activity was implemented in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President of the Philippines (OVP), the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR), and the Philippine Red Cross – Zamboanga City Chapter.

Faculty members, volunteers, and community residents planted mangrove seedlings along the shoreline, highlighting the vital role of mangroves in preventing coastal erosion, supporting marine biodiversity, and sustaining local livelihoods. OCENR provided technical guidance on species selection and site management, while the Philippine Red Cross supported community mobilization efforts.

The initiative aligns with the emphasis of University President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena on the importance of strong partnerships among national agencies, local government units, and community stakeholders in advancing WMSU’s environmental advocacy and extension programs. The activity reflects the University’s commitment to promoting sustainability, community engagement, and climate-responsive development in coastal communities
